MS Clinical Care Connection
A Resource for Healthcare Professionals

Tackling High MS Drug Costs
Disease modifying therapies (DMT) are only effective if people living with MS can afford them. Bari Talente, National MS Society Executive Vice President of Advocacy, recently testified on Capitol Hill as part of the "Making Health Care More Affordable: Lowering Drug Pricing and Increasing Transparency" hearing. Learn how the Society continues to raise awareness around the high cost of MS DMTs.

Are your patients being denied coverage for the DMT you’ve prescribed? Be sure to check out our Appeal Letter Toolkit, which includes template appeal letters to support appeal efforts.
Lifting the Cannabis Fog
New data presented at ECTRIMS, the world's largest MS conference, demonstrated the reversible effects of cannabis on cognition in MS. Anthony Feinstein, M.B.B.Ch., M.Phil., PhD, FRCPC and collaborators found significant improvement in memory, information processing speeds, and executive function after discontinuing cannabis compared to those who continued use. Read more about the study.
Biomarker Suggests MS Starts Earlier Than You Think
More data on the potential biomarker, neurofilament light chain – NfL, were presented at ECTRIMS. Kjetil Bjornevik, MD, PhD presented his team's findings confirming higher than usual levels of serum NfL in 60 military personnel six years before the clinical onset. Other studies have shown that years before they are diagnosed with MS, people show a pattern of healthcare utilization. These studies suggest that MS begins well before there are perceptible symptoms, offering hope for being able to predict and possibly prevent MS. Read more about the study.
Telehealth Education Program Improves Provider Confidence and Clinical Practice
Videoconference case consultation between community providers caring for individuals with MS and MS experts demonstrated improved confidence in treatment decisions, changes in patient care and practice habits, as well as an increased perception that their patients had confidence in them. Learn more about this program—Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes).
Positive Results from Two Phase 3 DMT Trials
Results of two phase 3 clinical trials testing therapies for relapsing forms of MS were presented at ECTRIMS. Both ofatumumab, a self-administered monthly subcutaneous injection that depletes immune B cells and ponesimod, an oral S1P1 receptor inhibitor, reached their primary endpoints. Read detailed study results of ofatumumab and ponesimod.
