MS relapses are decreased by 80% during late pregnancy, which may be due to estriol, the major estrogen of pregnancy. Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl, UCLA, and investigators in California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania seek women with MS for a multi-center clinical trial that will explore estriol’s effects on MS-related cognitive issues. In an earlier, Society-funded study, Dr. Voskuhl’s team showed that estriol decreased MS activity in 12 women living with the disease.
Researchers in the U.S. and Canada are recruiting 180 people with secondary-progressive MS for a phase II clinical trial of Tcelna, a personalized T-cell therapy using a person’s own immune cells. The therapy is tailored to each person’s immune response to myelin and has previously been shown to reduce MS-related T-cell activity.
