Annie and her army 2015

Annie's Army

There are several questions people ask us…..

What is MS?
Who is Annie?
That amount of mileage is crazy… why do you do that???
Those are to name a few…. Over the last few years, more and more people have learned what MS is, know who Annie is and many want to be crazy too after hearing the story. Here is a bit about the story of Annie’s Army.

Who is Annie of Team Annie’s Army??
Since 2012, our team has been riding for the MS Society of Mid Florida in the Bike MS 150 in honor of Annie Schulte Peterson. In 2016, we rode in memory of Annie as we will continue to do in 2017 and many years to follow. Monday, September 7, 2015 she went to be with our Lord and is no longer in pain and struggling with the disease. Please read more about our journey and what we do as a team for the MS Society….

Annie is a mom, wife, aunt, friend, sister…… my sister and why I ride 150 miles over 2 days for the MS Society of Mid Florida.
Annie, the 5th sibling of 6 kids, she was always a fun, vibrant and ball of energy. At the height of her professional life in the hospitality industry around the age of 33, she noticed something was wrong with her vision. Family noticed that she dropped things a lot and stumbled a bit. At first, I thought maybe she was drinking during the day…. No idea what else could be wrong with a healthy young lady. Finally, she went to a fantastic eye doctor in Oviedo, Dr. McDonald who finally suggested she get tested for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). And then the journey began….. she had MS and the fight was on to keep the affects at bay for as long as possible. Over the years, Annie’s progression with MS was very little. Every so often she would have “episodes” and was able to recover from them.
Fast forward to 2004, Annie and her husband, Kyle were fortunate enough to finally adopt their first and only child Katie. This was one of the happiest days of her their lives. But gradually the MS “episodes” were coming more frequently and with less of the ability to recover back to normal. In 2005, her sister Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37 and Annie’s life and focus was on her little sister to save her life. The new baby, the sister with breast cancer, working and stress created some more episodes for Annie and her MS began to take little bit of her energy and strength ever so gradually.

In support of her sister, Annie Schulte Peterson and to help with awareness, Linda decided to ride 150 miles for MS in 2012 and Team Annie’s Army was formed!!! First year, we had only 4 team members of Linda, Judi Robison, Mike Butler and Shannon Felkner but we had a BLAST and our butts did hurt. We came back in 2013 and our team grew to 15 riders. For 2014, our goal was 21 riders……. we had 25 registered team members 21 attended the ride and we raised over $14,000 together. 2015 ride, we had over 30 registered team members, 27 riders and nearly $15,000 raised. GO TEAM ANNIE’S ARMY!! For 2016 we had largest team ever…. This sadly was our memorial ride for Annie who lost her battle with MS in September 2015. Proudly, we had nearly 50 registered rider, 36 riders that included her 12 year daughter and her husband kyle. .

As we roll into the 2017 season of riding, we would love to have more riders. Surpass any mile stone of the past but more importantly, we want to spread awareness of MS, have fun and enjoy the ride with so many amazing people. And of course to keep Annie’s Legacy Alive. Her spirt was always high, always light and always positive.

MS is a thief that robs a person of their energy, strength, mobility and independence. The MS Society of Mid Florida helps their constituent with support emotionally, financially and with services to assist with everyday life for both the patient and families. One of the programs that has been an tremendous benefit for Annie’s daughter Katie is the Kids camp. The camp is for kids who have a parent dealing with MS. Katie attended in 2013 and said it was amazing. In her words “I want to go back every year. And the when I am old enough, I want to be a camp counselor”. Katie attended the camp again in 2014 and was just as amazed by the experience again this year.

Through our efforts of riding, fundraising and donations, it is our hope that we will put MS in it’s own wheelchair and stop it from rolling over others in the prime of their lives. Awareness is the key to early detection to begin the process to stave off the effects of this disease. Awareness helps all of us understand what the patient is going through. Awareness, will help find a cure!

About MS
Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling, disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Millions of people are affected by MS and the challenges of living with its unpredictable symptoms, which range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
