2017 is finally upon us and we are especially excited because that means it is officially Bike MS season. The Great Maine Getaway takes place on August 12th & 13th at University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Riders kick off their ride on Saturday morning along a beautiful, coastal destination ride which attracts riders from all over New England and even further. It’s an incredible celebration of Maine’s most cherished aspects while at the same time raising money for an incredible cause.
This year, Team Tom is hitting the coastal ride for the third time. Team Tom first began as a team in the Walk MS event in 2010 in memory of Tom Brown who died of MS in 2006. Tom was a husband, a father and a friend and we are proud to continue his legacy through multiple National MS Society events each year. Tom was diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS on his 30th birthday in 1997, his daughter Darcie was 6 months old at the time. Even as Tom’s MS worsened his contagious laugh and legendary smile never died. From wheelchairs to electric scooters, his weekly trips to Nicely's Market and our Dunkin Donuts continued on religiously. No matter how sick Tom felt on a particular day, he still radiated positivity and happiness wherever he went; Tom reminded the people around him to cherish every moment and bring positivity with you everywhere you go.
Team Tom’s time as a walk MS team was very successful. Our first team was founded in 2010 by Tom’s daughter, Darcie. The first team had 10 members and by the time Darcie graduated high school in 2015 we had grown to a 40+ member team and had raised a cumulative $50,000+ for MS research and support services for MS patients in Maine. Darcie continued Team Tom in college where Team Tom walked in the Walk MS event in D.C., comprised of almost 30 members walking with us this past walk season raising almost $7,000. Team Tom is so grateful for all the support we’ve received in the past by our Maine community, friends and family. We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the incredible feat we did were it not for them.
We’re especially excited for Team Tom to continue their journey in Bike MS and we are even more excited to say that Team Tom “on wheels” has already grown tremendously since the 2015 Bike MS event. So Team Tom is reaching out to you: we are seeking your financial support in this year’s Bike MS event to help us reach our $5,000 goal. Anything you can contribute is immensely appreciated and will go to improve the lives of the 3,100 Mainers who are affected by MS.
