For more than 20 years, BJC HealthCare has supported the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, sending teams of riders to BikeMS in Columbia, MO and this year, to Godfrey, IL. This year’s ride is Sept. 9-10.
Many of us ride for the camaraderie. We ride to challenge ourselves. We ride to experience the support and encouragement along the route – dedicated volunteers who make sure we’re well fed, have plenty to drink and cheer us. It’s a happy, fun two days.
We ride for many reasons, but we have a single purpose: to help those afflicted with MS. The money we raise enables the National MS Society to fund research, advocate for change and help people with MS live their best lives.
The MS ride is like no other event. On a crisp September morning at dawn, the anticipation is palpable. Last minute bike checks. Gathering together for BJC’s team photo. The excitement of crossing the starting line wearing a BJC HealthCare jersey.
Then there’s the ride. Every 10 miles or so, around a corner or over a hill, in the middle of nowhere, you hear it. Music, laughter, cheering, clanging cowbells pierce the quiet of the countryside. As you approach, you see it. Hundreds of bicycles leaning against trees, lying in the grass and in ditches, people stepping over and around them to refill water bottles, share ride stories and make new friends.
At the end of the ride, the finish line in sight, exhilaration replaces exhaustion. It’s a whole new party – live music, camaraderie, “helmet hair” and flip flops.
It’s a group effort that transcends personal accomplishment and touches the lives of the thousands of people affected by MS in our community. Ride one day, ride two. Ride 20 miles or ride 200. Support your colleagues. Volunteer. It’s up to you. Join us!For more than 20 years, BJC HealthCare has supported the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, sending teams of riders to this wonderful event. This year’s ride is Sept. 9-10.
