Multiple Sclerosis - Almost Everyone Knows Someone

For many years my daughter Brittany and I have ridden in honor of our friend Barbara, who was diagnosed with MS when she was a teenager. Barbara has lived more than 40 years with the disease, and now uses an electric "scooter" for mobility. Medications have come and gone over the years, and Barbara has found certain ones to be more helpful than others. But at this time there is no product that can provide relief without intolerable side effects.

Barbara greatly appreciates the impact that the MS Society has had on her life.

Approximately 400,000  people live with MS in the United States.  Maybe you would like to contribute - or ride the tour - in honor of an MS patient you know.

My Experience With The City-To-Shore Tour

2014 will be my 23rd consecutive year riding the City-To-Shore Tour to raise funds for the National MS Society. Last year this bicycling event raised 5.6 million dollars for research, patient support, and education. This year I will raise funds with the Merck Team again, praying for safety and good weather.

My daughter Brittany has ridden this event with me many times since her teen years - and one year Brittany and husband Peter worked as volunteers, instead.  Consider doing this, if you have the weekend open, and can not ride for one reason or annother. Volunteers are the key to a safe and successful bike tour each year!

Your donation will make a tremendous impact on those living with multiple sclerosis.

Research - is progressing at a remarkable rate. Funds raised by the chapter are helping researchers around the world to determine the cause of MS, develop treatments and ways to prevent MS, restore damage that has been done as a result of the disease, and to eventually find a cure.

Support Programs - Life with MS impacts everyone in the family. The Greater Delaware Valley Chapter offers a full slate of programs aimed at educating people about how to overcome the disease’s physical, social and financial effects, whether you are a person living with MS or a caregiver.

Direct Financial Assistance - The Delaware Valley chapter is committed to helping people with MS maintain independence through emergency financial assistance, medical equipment and home modifications, respite care, and transportation for medical appointments.

How Your Dollars Can Make a Difference

  • $75 provides three hours of home health aide care, or transportation for a person with MS to get to his or her neurology appointment
  • $100 pays for bathroom safety grab bars or incontinence supplies for one month
  • $250 funds two physical therapy home visits
  • $500 provides emergency funds for families living with MS to help with basic needs including food, rent, mortgage or utilities
  • $1,000 covers the co-pay on an electric scooter
  • $3,500 helps a person with MS install a custom stair glide
  • $5,000 creates a memorial scholarship to help a student attend college who has MS or has a parent with MS
  • $7,500 helps install a ramp

Why You Should Donate This Year

The National MS Society will use the funds collected from this Cherry Hill--Ocean City--Cherry Hill bike tour to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Because we can fight this disease by simply riding a bike, because we have chosen to help thousands of people through a contribution to the MS Bike Tour, we are now getting closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS."
