Join me on the ride from Houston to Austin and help me end MS
I am riding for several reasons.
The first is for the millions of people that suffer from MS, and the tangible good that donations made to the National MS Society can do for those people. I didn't know much about MS when I signed up to ride last year, but in the course of my training I learned more and more - that it's a disease that can strike anyone, at any age. That it's effects are brutal and can crop up out of nowhere with little warning. I learned about strength from the people with MS I rode with - exceptionally dedicated, of all ages, looking for a cure.
I am also riding for me. As some of you know, I broke my shoulder in several places in an accident on a training ride back in November 2011. When I met with my orthapedic surgeon after my trip to the ER, my request to him was that we get operational in time for me to do this ride. We pulled together an aggessive schedule of appointments and physical therapy. This ride is what's getting me up 45 minutes earlier to get my exercises done, and it's what's keeping me focused through the same routine before I go to bed.
Finally, I'm riding for the community that this all creates - 10,000 riders, 100,000s of donors - working together for a common goal. Every town we rode through was lined with people cheering us on, and every one I met at the overnight in La Grange was all smiles despite the 80 miles they rode that morning. We live in a world that often focuses on the divisions between us. Taking 2 days to be part of a world that focuses on what binds us together seems like a step in the right direction.
With your donation, you join me on my ride - in tackling MS, in my slog through the shoulder recovery, and in building a community based on a common, positive purpose.
Thank you,
-e.
