Each year, the Philadelphia Central Labor Council nominates a Philadelphia labor leader to the MS Leaders Circle. It is one way the labor community shows its commitment to the broader good. This year, I am honored to have been selected as the labor nominee. It is an honor not only for me but for UNITE HERE Local 274 and the other UNITE HERE locals in Philadelphia.
In UNITE HERE, we fight everyday for working people to have access to good, affordable health insurance. I have been a part of struggles, including strikes, that were primarily, if not entirely, focused on winning good benefits for food service, hotel and casino workers, and their families. In this way, labor leaders are at the forefront of fighting diseases like MS. We struggle to make sure that all people have access to quality services, should they be diagnosed with a serious illness such as MS.
Personally, I have a different but not dissimilar autoimmune disorder called myasthenia gravis. I know first hand how important it is to have excellent health insurance and have top-level research into these disorders. Both my daughter and I have benefited from exceptional research and excellent institutions to treat my MG. Like MS, there was a time when MG was a death sentence. We need organizations like the MS Society to continue to improve the lives of people with MS.
For those who don't know much about MS, it is an autoimmune disorder that affects people in very different ways. It can mean that you may not be able to walk when you wake up. Or that you may suddenly have impaired vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. The symptoms of MS are different, and devastating, for everyone - the only certainty is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day.
The work of the MS Society has and, with our support, will continue to dramatically change the lives of people with MS.
I ask you to support me, UNITE HERE Philadelphia and the Philadelphia labor movement by making a donation today to the MS Society of the Greater Delaware Valley. You can donate by clicking the "Donate to Rosslyn" button at the top left hand of this screen.
