Meet Team Birgit,
The “Jürgensen” sisters will be running the Women Rock Chicago ½ marathon on September 21st to honor our Mom.
Over the past year I've run a few different races and in September I'll be running my first half marathon - the Women Rock Marathon on September 21 on behalf of the National MS Society.
I have run (2) ½ marathons in Salem, MA and other smaller races which includes (2) 5Ks with my daughter Catherine who is 11 and has also acquired a love for running. When Helene committed to the Chicago ½ I thought it would be fun to join her so I quickly booked a ticket and registered for the race.
Birgit (our Mom):
7 years ago she was diagnosed with MS. It's unusual to be diagnosed so late in life, and for someone as fiercely independent as she is it's been hard. The medication she takes is meant to slow the progress of the disease - there is no cure. She used to enjoy exploring the many cities she has lived in and visited around the world. Now, she walks with a cane and gets tired easily. She can no longer spend a long day enjoying museums and windowshopping like she used to. She is a very proud person who does not like asking for help, but now has to.
Our parents were going to fly in from Denmark to cheer us on. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago, Mom fell and broke her hip. Surgery went well and she is currently in a rehab facility until she can walk on her own again.
We run for those who no longer can. We run for those who have trouble walking. We run for those whose nervous systems have been afflicted by this disease. We run to help find a cure.
Within the hour, another person will be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. People living with MS overcome challenges everyday: to walk; to have energy to go to the store; to have the will power not to give up. That's why it is so important to me to support the mission of the National MS Society by raising funds for programs and services that give hope to families in Illinois who are affected by MS, and for cutting-edge research into an eventual core that will end MS forever.
YOU CAN JOIN THE MOVEMENT, TOO!
