Monster Scramble 5K/10K – a wicked run that’s wicked fun!
Online registration for this event is now closed, but you can still join the fun by registering on the morning of the event! Just visit us on October 22nd at Mt. Hope Cemetery beginning at 8:30 a.m. and we can get you signed up and ready to walk or run! See you there!
The National MS Society Upstate New York Chapter is pulling out all the stops to put an end to multiple sclerosis. In October, adults and children alike will lace up their running shoes to participate in the Chapter’s chip-timed, Halloween-themed 5K/10K fundraising event, full of chills and thrills, spooky costumes, and sweet treats. The event will also include a one-mile, kid-friendly trick-or-treat family fun walk.
The run will include official timing and scoring, with prizes for the winners in each age bracket and for reaching fundraising milestones of $100, $250 and $500. Costumes are encouraged. Prizes will also be awarded for the best adult, child, and group costume. All proceeds from the Monster Scramble 5K/10K, will benefit the National MS Society Upstate New York Chapter.
The registration fee for runners is $25 pre-event and $30 day-of event. Walkers pay $5 pre-event and $10 day-of. Fundraising is optional but highly encouraged and prizes will be awarded based on levels achieved and top fundraisers at each site. The first 750 runners to pre-register (chapter-wide) will receive a free Monster Scramble 5K/10K commemorative t-shirt and finishing medal. At most sites registration opens at 8:30 a.m. (7:30 for Capital District), the run starts at 10a.m. (9:00 for Capital District), and awards will be distributed around 11 a.m.
More than 13,000 Upstate New Yorkers are affected by multiple sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown and there is currently no cure for MS. Symptoms can include, among other things, numbness in the limbs, difficulties with vision and speech, stiffness, loss of mobility and, in some more severe cases, total paralysis. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot be predicted. “That is why we raise funds at this fabulously fun event,” says Christy Field, Director of Events at the National MS Society. “We need to fund research to find a cure and Monster Scramble 5K/10K gives people the chance to do that while having a great time!”
NEW THIS YEAR! After the Monster Scramble 5K/10K race or 1 mile trick-or-treat walk, head back to the parking lot at Al Sigl Center (off of the South Avenue entrance — see map) to pick up a hot BBQ lunch. You don't have to participate in the Monster Scramble to enjoy.
