Team Safety Coordinator

The Team Safety Coordinator serves an important role in assisting their Team Captain in carrying out the planning and execution of safety education, training, and awareness for their fellow team members participating in the BP MS 150. As a liaison to the National MS Society, the Team Safety Coordinator has the potential to make a significant impact by assisting with various aspects of safety education and training.

Team Safety Coordinator Program

Persons interested in being their Team's Safety Coordinator should exhibit certain competencies, which might include:

  • Support for the mission of the National MS Society and the BP MS 150
  • Passion for people, cycling, and safety
  • Safety-related experience or a willingness to develop the necessary knowledge
  • Good communication skills
  • Be a team player, positive, outgoing, and persuasive
  • Be organizational and innovative

The responsibilities of the Team Safety Coordinator include:

  • Setting the standards and expectations for team safety
  • Communicating all available safety information to the team through newsletters, team website, email, etc.
  • Organizing Group Riding Skills classes for the team
  • Conducting safety briefings before each team-sponsored ride and before each day of the BP MS 150
  • Recruitment of Ride Marshals for the team
  • Setting team safety goals and encouraging team members to set personal safety goals
  • Providing safety education information and resources available through the National MS Society
  • Ensuring the team qualifies for one of the Team Safety Awards
  • Creating individual and team incentives to promote a safety focus
  • Encouraging all team members to stay diligent regarding their safety and the safety of others
  • Recognition of individual and team accomplishments

Team Safety Coordinator Role Description (pdf)

The Team Safety Coordinator can make a significant impact on the health and safety of each team member and their team overall. Additionally, this position will have influence over the reputation and public perception of the organization represented by the individual team members while riding in the BP MS 150. By serving in this role, the Team Safety Coordinator will have an opportunity for personal growth and development of leadership skills, collaboration, teamwork, and communications. As part of their team's leadership, the Team Safety Coordinator is a major contributor to the success of their team, the safety of its riders, and the status of their organization.

The BP MS 150 Safety Committee and the National MS Society will provide basic training and support as needed throughout the event season.
