What Is MS:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, autoimmune disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS). The CNS is composed of the brain and spinal cord where it serves as the main "processing center" for the entire nervous system, and controls all the workings of the entire body.

When someone has Multiple Sclerosis, that person’s immune system (which is there is fight off infections in the body) mistakes a protective coating around the nerves, called myelin, as a foreign invader and attacks. Depending on the severity of someone’s battle with MS, the myelin is either partially destroyed or completely destroyed.

As well as damage of (or complete loss) the protective myelin coating on the nerves, there can also be damage to the actual nerves themselves.

This damage disrupts messages traveling from the brain along the nerves. Which means that messages from the brain sent down the Central Nervous System, such as walking, are slow down, become distorted, or do not get through at all.

Each person’s battle with MS is different. Like snowflakes, there are no two MS battles that are alike. Which makes the battle of fighting the disease much more difficult.

Ashleigh Marie’s MS Journey:

On July 29, 2013 I was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. At that time, I was determined to bring awareness about Multiple Sclerosis to my friends, family, and community. I made a decision to create video blog (via YouTube) that chronicles my journey with MS, the treatments I am on and the struggles (and victories) that come with this disease.

I wanted to share my journey with others so that anyone new to the MS battle (or seasoned veterans) could know that they had someone who understood what they were going through. I wanted a way for us to connect and fight this battle together; I wanted to bring our MS Journeys together.

Why I Am Participating In The Grand Rapids Walk MS 2014:

I am participating in the Grand Rapids Michigan Walk MS 2014, to walk for those who cannot, to bring awareness about Multiple Sclerosis to my community, and to raise donations for new treatment options & a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

I am participating in the Grand Rapids Walk MS 2014, so that one day, there is never another new mother, wife, and college student in their 20's go through a MS battle.

I want to Walk MS Multiple sclerosis affects millions of people, including our co-workers, friends, families and loved ones. That's why I registered for Walk MS. Walk MS is where we connect and each step we take brings us closer to a world free of MS.

What I Am Asking From You:

Join me for the Grand Rapids MS Walk 2014 at Aquinas College on Saturday May 17 at 9am (ends at 1pm) for a 5k walk.
